Milk of Human Kindness (MOHK) is a venture run voluntarily by Bristol mothers Jo Bradshaw and Aime Faal. It was born out of the desire to help change the hostile environment and lack of support (perceived or otherwise) faced by many new mums and their families when they attempt to breastfeed. We see a particularly negative portayal of breastfeeding in the media and a lack of understanding of its essential role in the health of our children. Although there is a law protecting nusing mothers in Scotland, there is no such thing in the UK and as such many women feel scared and embarassed to breastfeed in public; some hiding in a toilet or remaining at home.
There is, let's face it, an image problem too, and a distinct lack of real-world role models, now that women are growing up in a bottlefeeding culture.
Our BBEO event ran from the 1st - 7th August 2006 during World Breastfeeding Week, and challenges cafes, restaurants and public places to encourage and welcome breastfeeding women. We have designed some retro tees and window stickers, as well as flyers promoting the cause. In the first week we signed up over 20 local cafes, all of which are listed on our website. Now we need to take the campaign forward but we cannot do it without your help. At the moment all the expenses are coming out of our own pocket so any contributions are most gratefully received.See http://www.milkofhumankindness.org.uk for more.
